PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma)

PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) in Brussels · Dr Axel De Lange

PRP is a regenerative medicine approach that aims to improve skin quality and to support certain treatments for hair loss, without surgery or fillers.

PRP, or platelet-rich plasma, is a plasma concentrate obtained from a sample of the patient's blood, then prepared by centrifugation to enrich the plasma fraction with platelets.

Platelets contain growth factors involved in the mechanisms of tissue repair and regeneration. Injecting them aims to stimulate certain local biological responses, particularly in the skin and scalp.

PRP can be used for various aesthetic indications, mainly to improve certain parameters of skin quality and as a complementary treatment for certain forms of hair loss. Results remain variable, and the scientific evidence is stronger for certain hair indications than for skin rejuvenation.

The goalTo harness the biological properties of platelets to support natural repair mechanisms and gradually improve tissue quality.

PRP is intended for women and men who wish to improve certain aspects of their skin quality or to receive a complementary treatment for hair loss.

On the face, it may be considered for patients with dull skin, a slight deterioration in skin texture or the first signs of ageing, bearing in mind that its aesthetic effectiveness remains variable.

For hair, it is mainly offered to patients with early or moderate androgenetic alopecia, when the hair follicles are still active.

A prior medical assessment is essential, in particular to check for a platelet abnormality, a clotting disorder, an active infection or any other contraindication.

To offer appropriate biological stimulation to patients likely to benefit from it, with realistic expectations regarding the results.

Your journey,
step by step.

The techniques

Facial PRP

Micro-injections designed to improve certain parameters of skin texture, radiance and quality, with generally subtle results.

The techniques

Eye-area PRP

Treatment of certain changes in skin quality in the periorbital region, without a volumising effect comparable to that of hyaluronic acid.

The techniques

Neck and décolletage PRP

Injections aimed at improving the quality and suppleness of the skin in these areas.

The techniques

Hair PRP

A complementary treatment for certain types of alopecia, notably androgenetic alopecia, aimed at promoting the density and quality of existing hair.

The techniques

PRP combined with microneedling

Application or injection of PRP as part of a skin stimulation protocol, the value of which depends on the indication.

The techniques

PRP combined with a hair transplant

Complementary use in certain transplant protocols, without a consistently demonstrated benefit.

Step 01

Consultation

This first meeting allows us to analyse your skin or your scalp, depending on the indication for treatment.

For an aesthetic indication, the examination focuses in particular on texture, suppleness and skin changes related to ageing.

For a hair indication, it is essential to establish the cause of the hair loss, how long it has been present and how it has progressed. Further tests may be needed to rule out a medical cause requiring specific treatment.

We discuss the expected benefits, the limitations of PRP, the number of sessions envisaged and any other treatments that may be more appropriate.

To determine whether PRP is a relevant option and to define a protocol suited to your situation.

Step 04

Follow-up

PRP treatment does not generally require demanding medical follow-up. A check-up consultation may be offered after a few weeks to assess how well the treatment has been tolerated and the first results. An initial protocol of 3 sessions, generally 4 to 6 weeks apart, is often recommended, particularly for hair indications. The results are then assessed after 3 to 6 months, and maintenance sessions may be considered depending on progress and the individual response to treatment.

Step 02 · Treatment

Anaesthesia

Generally no anaesthesia is needed. An anaesthetic cream or local anaesthesia may be offered depending on the area treated.

Step 02 · Treatment

Duration

About 30 to 45 minutes, including the blood sample, the preparation of the PRP and the injections.

Step 02 · Treatment

Setting

The treatment is carried out in the medical practice, under appropriate aseptic conditions.

Step 02 · Treatment

Technique

A blood sample is taken and centrifuged according to a specific protocol, then the platelet-enriched plasma is injected into the skin or scalp using fine needles.

Step 02 · Treatment

Recovery

Daily activities can generally be resumed quickly. Redness, local tenderness, slight swelling or small bruises may persist for a few days.

Step 03 · Settling period

The first hours

Slight redness, tenderness or swelling may appear at the injection sites. It is advisable to avoid touching the treated areas and to follow the aftercare instructions.

Step 03 · Settling period

The first days

Local reactions gradually subside. Usual activities can generally be resumed quickly, while temporarily avoiding irritation and harsh skincare on the injected areas.

Step 03 · Settling period

After 1 to 2 months

The first effects may be seen, depending on the indication. Several sessions are generally needed, often 4 to 6 weeks apart, to complete the initial protocol.

Step 03 · Settling period

After 3 to 6 months

The results can be assessed more precisely. For hair indications, a change in hair density or quality may become noticeable, with a response that varies from patient to patient.

Step 03 · Settling period

After 6 to 12 months

A follow-up consultation makes it possible to assess whether the benefits have lasted and to discuss any maintenance sessions. Their frequency depends on the indication, the individual response and any associated treatments.

Common question

Is PRP treatment painful?

The treatment is generally well tolerated. It consists of a blood sample followed by micro-injections into the skin or scalp, which may cause a slight tingling sensation or discomfort. An anaesthetic cream can be applied to improve the patient's comfort. Any redness or tenderness usually disappears within a few days.

Common question

How many sessions should I plan for?

The number of sessions depends on the indication and the results sought. An initial protocol of 3 sessions, generally 4 to 6 weeks apart, is frequently offered, particularly for the treatment of hair loss. Results appear gradually and can be assessed after several months. Maintenance sessions may then be considered depending on the individual response.

Common question

Should I plan for social downtime after PRP treatment?

PRP generally requires no social downtime, and daily activities can be resumed soon after the session. Slight redness, swelling or small bruises may, however, appear at the injection sites and persist for a few days. It is advisable to avoid intense sporting activity and high heat for the first 24 hours.

Common question

What results can be expected from PRP treatment?

The results depend on the area treated and on individual characteristics. On the face, PRP can help to gradually improve certain parameters of skin quality and texture, without changing volume. On the scalp, it may promote an improvement in hair density in some patients with early or moderate alopecia. The effects remain variable and are not guaranteed; several months may be needed to fully assess the response to treatment.
